Welcome to Communication Research Group (CRG)
TRESCIMO held a workshop on “Alternative ways to collect information for Smart Cities” in Barcelona at the UPC in June the 10th, 2015.
Several speakers presented their view to an auditorium consisting of members of different municipalities and invited guests from national SMEs, as well as to interested students. As introduction, Maria Barros Weiss presented an overview about the TRESCIMO project and its trials in Spain and in South Africa.
The first invited presentation was held by Luis Muñoz from the SmartSantander project. The IoT deployment in Santander was shown. The presentation provided an overview of what was already reached but also some new aspects like the co-creative process of involving people and combine measured events with human findings.
Afterwards, Josep Paradells, professor of the UPC, demonstrated how data of the car can be accessed via smartphone and how this can be used to create new services.
The following presentation, about Delay Tolerant Networks and radio wake-up systems, performed by Marisa Catalan from i2CAT and working inside the TRESCIMO project, showed an example deployment of low power devices where an existing infrastructure, the bus lines, was used to collect the results.
What can be done with the in-build sensing possibilities of existing smartphones was shown by Xavier Puig from Cobertura mobil. To overcome the reticence of people to retrieve voluntary shared data, additional services are to be provided to the volunteers that upload their data.
Iony Razakamanantsoa, from Cellnex, presented a specialized IoT data network based on SIGFOX technology that handles many devices. It enables devices which send small packets spread along the day to be deployed with low power and long range communication.
